Wrapped Under the Tree

I love the holidays. I love everything about it. The gift giving, the decorating, the time spent with close ones, egg nog, Santa in the mall, Mariah Carey's holiday cd... I'd sign up to be Santa's helper if it weren't for those ugly green tights.  I've loved Christmas for as long as I can remember.  My favorite activity in grade school was building the paper tree where you could count down the days by pulling the links or ornaments off of the tree.

But this time of year also makes me feel lonelier than any other. My family doesn't get together for the holidays, no one gets along, and it's always a big tug of war to decide where I'll be for Christmas. Generally I do the obligatory couple of days at my parent's house, where we hang out as if it's any other day in September.  And if I feel like causing drama with my mother, then I'll fly down to see my sister and her family.  Though I haven't seen her in about two years.  :(  This year I'm going to my parent's early and then spending Christmas with friends in the city.  And while it's fun to be with friends, it's really not the same to open presents and do holiday cheers with a family that isn't your own.
